Project Value: £780k
Project Duration: 10 Weeks
Main Contractor: Barr Construction
Consultant: EIC
Business Sector: Retail
Tesco´s first "eco" store located in Wick in the North of Scotland. The store covers 50,000 ft2 and is constructed using a timber rather than steel frame. This groundbreaking store employs a range of green technologies.
Our scope of work included the design and installation of five wind turbines to the store and one to the fuel station, solar panels to the north of the store and the installation of a full lighting control system in the sales area using photocells to promote energy efficiency by following self adjusting lights to dim and turn off according to natural levels. PIR control was provided to all back of house lighting. Time clocks were installed to the sales floor area and café to reduce the lighting levels during non-trading and low occupancy periods.
With the introduction of environmentally friendly technologies, this store will have a 50% smaller carbon footprint compared to the usual format for a store of this size. Using local labour, shipping in supplies rather than using road transport and using redundant buildings rather than bringing in site accommodation also assisted in reducing the construction carbon footprint by 20%. Due to the success of our work undertaken at Wick, EIC have won a further "eco" store for Tesco located in Shrewsbury and were also presented with an award for the high quality service and installation provided.
